The Universe with Attributes

The Big Bang Theory is the leading explanation about how the universe came into existence. It says the universe as we know, started with a small singularity 13.8 billion years ago and kept expanding since then to the cosmos that we know today. The expansion still continues.

The ancient Indian scriptures (Vedas), besides philosophical aspects, discuss at length over the creation of universe. Vedas conceptualise the universe in a somewhat similar manner. They say, the universe was born out of a singularity, they name as Brahman. This Brahman is single (advait) and unique. It is attributeless (Nirguna). The universe with attributes (Saguna) took birth from this attributeless (Nirguna) Brahman, on its own (Swasamvedya). This universe with attributes is conscious. Thus took the birth of cosmic consciousness (Paramatma) and from that all the living world. Thus, according to Vedas, the entire living world shares the same consciousness. Like some of the modern scientists, Vedas accept that consciousness came first, then the universe. Thus, consciousness is the source of universe. With consciousness, time and space also came into existence.

Consciousnesses always Expands: The universe came in into existence with big bang 13.8 billion years ago and started expanding in time and space. This is the proof that it is conscious, for consciousness always expands in time and space. Think of a seed sown in the ground. It gains consciousness, once it sprouts, then keeps expanding in time and space. This is true of all the conscious beings. Here the space is not just a physical one but also conceptual, like working space.

Three Attributes (triguna): According to Vedanta (The word Vedanta literally means the end of the Vedas and originally referred to another set of ancient scriptures namely the Upanishads), the three attributes of universe are Utpatti (creation), Sthitee (existence) and Laya (annihilation). These three attributes are conceptually embodied by the three deities, namely Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, respectively. There is another deity that combines all the three attributes (Trigunatmak Traimurti), namely Shri Datta Guru. The embodiment of Brahma-Vishnu-Mahesh is idealised as Guru, the 'supreme teacher'.

The Universe in its primordial state (Sanskrit Nirguna or attributeless) is inconceivable. Hence, how it gets revealed to the human intelligence, should be understood. In other words, for better realisation, the "inconceivable" should be expressed and experienced in the "conceivable" form. The universe with attributes (Sanskrit Saguna) is an attempt towards that.
